Does Note-Taking Help Memory?
Note-taking does two separate things, and almost every argument about it is confused because the two are treated as one.
Encoding. The benefit of the act of writing. Selecting, condensing and rephrasing is cognitive work, and the work leaves a trace whether or not you ever look at the note.

That distinction is old, it is durable, and it maps exactly onto the two halves of this site: capture is the encoding function and revisiting is the storage function.

The famous study, and what happened to it
Mueller and Oppenheimer published "The pen is mightier than the keyboard" in Psychological Science in 2014. Students watched lectures and took notes by hand or on a laptop. Laptop notes contained more words and more verbatim transcription; longhand students performed better on conceptual questions. The proposed explanation was that writing by hand forces paraphrasing, and paraphrasing is encoding.
It became one of the most-cited results in education writing, quoted in op-eds, teaching guides and productivity books.
It has not held up.
Morehead, Dunlosky and Rawson published a direct replication and extension in Educational Psychology Review in 2019 and did not reproduce the original finding. Their conclusion was that deciding which method is superior seems premature.
Urry and colleagues published a further direct replication of the original Study 1 in Psychological Science, with 74 laptop and 68 longhand participants. The verbatim difference replicated — laptop users again wrote more words and more of them verbatim. The performance difference did not. Exploratory meta-analyses across eight similar studies showed the same pattern, and the authors state plainly that the results do not support the idea that longhand improves immediate learning through better encoding.
So: the mechanism was observed, the outcome was not.
What this is a lesson in
Not that handwriting is useless. That a widely-repeated finding can be wrong and stay in circulation for a decade, because it is memorable, intuitive, and flatters an existing preference.
If you see the pen-versus-keyboard claim cited today without the replication history, that citation is a decade behind. It is worth applying the same suspicion to every confident claim in this area, including the ones on this site.
What is actually established
Encoding is real. The act of selecting and condensing does something, and this is not seriously disputed. Meta-analytic work has examined both the encoding and external-storage effects and both appear, in different circumstances.
Verbatim transcription is worse than paraphrase. This part is consistent across the original and the replications — more verbatim overlap was associated with worse performance, though the replication found the association less robust than the original. The mechanism is plausible and the effect size is uncertain.
Reviewing notes helps. The storage function is better supported than the medium question ever was, and it is the half most people never get to.
And retrieval beats rereading. The best-established practical result in this whole area, and it is about what you do with the note rather than how you made it.
What follows practically
Stop worrying about the medium. Pen, keyboard, phone — the evidence does not support a strong recommendation, and the confidence with which people make one should make you suspicious.
Do worry about verbatim capture. Copying is the failure mode both media share, and it is the one thing the literature consistently associates with worse outcomes. Restating in your own words is the durable advice, and it survives the replication crisis intact because it is about processing rather than about hardware.
And recognise which function you are using. If you are writing to think, the note has done its job at the moment of writing and you owe it nothing further. If you are writing to store, then the note is worthless unless something brings it back, which is the problem the rest of this site is about.
Most people intend the first and behave as though they are doing the second, which is why the archive feels like a debt.
