Reading a Claim About Learning
Writing about notes, learning and productivity cites cognitive science constantly and accurately rarely. Not usually through dishonesty — through a chain of retellings, each of which drops a condition.

One: is there a citation at all
"Studies show" is not a citation. Neither is a link to another article that says "studies show."
Follow it until you reach a paper with authors, a year and a journal. If the chain ends without one, the claim has no support and the confidence with which it was stated is unearned.
This alone eliminates a surprising proportion of what circulates.

Two: what was the material
The check this field needs most.
Nonsense syllables, word lists, vocabulary, facts, procedures, or conceptual understanding? These behave very differently, and results do not transfer freely between them.
The forgetting curve was measured on nonsense syllables chosen specifically to have no meaning. Your notes are the most meaningful material you own. The testing effect held broadly and did not hold in mathematics.
If the material is not stated, the claim is not usable.
Three: what was measured, and when
Recall, recognition, savings, or performance on a later task? Savings is not the same as percentage remembered, and a graph labelled one while measuring the other is the commonest error in this area.
And after how long? Memory claims without a delay are meaningless — most interventions look different at ten minutes and at a month, and several reverse.
Four: compared with what
Against nothing, against unstructured study, or against a genuinely good alternative?
The comparison decides the number, and the flattering comparison is the common one. "Better than doing nothing" is a much weaker claim than it sounds, and it is what a lot of published effects amount to.
Five: who is saying it, and what do they sell
Not an accusation — a weighting.
In this field, most people invoking memory research are selling something that schedules reviews, organises notes, or teaches a method. That does not make them wrong. It means their summary is not the one to rely on, and the primary source is a click away.
The same weighting applies here. This site sells nothing, which removes one incentive and not all of them.
Six: does the citation support the specific claim
The subtlest and the most frequently violated.
A study can be real, well conducted, correctly described — and still not support the sentence attached to it. Spacing research supports spaced effortful retrieval; it does not support passive resurfacing, though it is cited for it constantly.
Ask: if this study is exactly right, does the recommendation follow? Often the answer is no, and the gap is where the borrowing happened.
The pattern to recognise
Almost all misuse in this area has the same shape.
A narrow finding, established under specific conditions, gets restated at increasing generality until it becomes a slogan, and the slogan gets attached to a product.
Each retelling is a small step. Nobody lies. And the destination is not supported by the origin.
You can usually spot it by how confident the claim is relative to how conditional the research is. Genuine findings in this area come with heterogeneity, ranges and caveats; slogans do not.
What to do when a claim fails the checks
Not necessarily discard it. Plenty of unsupported advice is good advice — reviewing your notes is worth doing whether or not the research says what people claim.
Just downgrade it from evidence to opinion, and weigh it accordingly. The problem is not that unsupported claims exist. It is that they arrive dressed as findings, and dressing changes how much weight people give them.
