Second-Brain Claims
The metaphor has a separate problem. This page is narrower: the specific claims made for note systems, checked one at a time against what the research actually says.
Five promises. They do not all fare the same way, and lumping them together is how the weak ones travel on the strong ones.

"Writing it down helps you understand it"
Supported. The encoding function is well established — selecting, condensing and rephrasing does cognitive work, and the work leaves a trace independent of whether you reread anything.
The associated caution is also established: verbatim copying is the failure mode. More verbatim overlap with a source is consistently associated with worse outcomes.

So the claim holds, with a condition that most note-taking practice violates by default.
"Reviewing helps you remember"
Supported, with the mechanism specified. Spaced, effortful retrieval is one of the best-replicated findings in cognitive science and beats rereading for durable retention.
The condition matters enormously: the evidence is about attempting recall, not about being shown material. Almost every product in this category implements the version the research does not support and cites the research anyway.
"The system will surface connections you did not see"
Plausible, widely reported, and unstudied.
This is the central promise of linked-note systems and the one with nothing behind it. There is no body of research showing that link-based note archives generate insight at a rate other arrangements do not.
That is not a claim that it does not happen — practitioners report it consistently and the mechanism is believable. It is a claim that the memory research does not reach this, and the confidence in the promise far exceeds the evidence for it.
Claims about creativity are a different category from claims about retention, and the second is routinely used to license the first.
"You will think better because your memory is offloaded"
Not a claim about memory, and not supported as stated.
Two problems. The offloading is real but the retrieval is not automatic — you cannot query for something you have forgotten you stored. And the premise that freeing memory improves thinking treats working memory and long-term storage as one resource, which they are not.
There is genuine research on cognitive offloading, and it mostly shows that people offload readily and that it changes what they remember. Whether it makes them think better is not established.
"The archive compounds in value"
Not supported, and probably false past a point.
Value does not scale with size. Search degrades, random selection degrades, review becomes impossible, and eventually the collection becomes something you avoid.
The claim persists because it is intuitive — more material sounds like more value — and because it licenses the behaviour already over-rewarded.
The pattern
Two supported claims, one unstudied, two unsupported.
And the supported ones both come with conditions the popular version drops. Writing helps if you rephrase rather than copy. Reviewing helps if you attempt recall rather than read. Those conditions are the entire practical content, and they are the first thing lost in retelling.
Which is the general shape of misuse in this area: a narrow finding, restated at increasing generality, until it supports a product. What remains genuinely unknown is larger than what is settled.
What to keep
Write in your own words. Supported, cheap, and it survives every caveat.
Attempt recall before reading. Supported, fifteen seconds.
Expect rediscovery rather than insight from any surfacing mechanism, and be pleased when it is more.
And be sceptical of anything that improves with size. In this domain, almost nothing does.
